Ecuatoriana #3 (Salsa)

What is playing in Ecuador, and how do those musical waves reach New York? “Ecuatoriana” is a radio show that digs and selects popular and alternative music made in the middle of the world—old, modern, and contemporary—for the Ecuayorquina diaspora. It plays music so you can feel Ecuador in New York. “The Caribbean ends in Guayaquil.” This idea was written by the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt in one of his journals during his journey through South America in the mid-19th century. In Guayaquil, Ecuador’s main port, you can listen to the Afro-Caribbean sonic reverberations in almost every street corner, public bus, and street food cart. Guayaquil welcomed Salsa, and later, the culture traveled throughout the nation. What are the connections between Ecuador and NYC’s 1970s salsa scene? What are Ecuadorian salsa’s personalities, places, and historical songs?
